Why have I done Team Lifeline every year since I was 11 years old? You might be wondering what is so special about this race that keeps me coming back every year, whether as a runner or volunteer. I will give you two words: Chai Lifeline.
Chai Lifeline is a beautiful organization that helps families going through illness, trauma, and loss. I can speak first hand to how amazing they are.
I was born with intrauterine growth restriction, which means I had a growth relapse before I was born. At the age of two, I was diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a rare genetic mutation that causes my body to create too many red cells, white cells, and platelets.
My family found out about Chai Lifeline when I was six. I started doing Team Lifeline when I was eleven.
When I was 14, I developed gastric ulcers in my stomach as a result of one of my meds, and I ended up in the PICU. Two weeks later, I went to Camp Simcha Without Borders. For the first time in weeks, I felt normal, and I forgot about the medical situation that took over my life. While I was there, everyone was talking about Camp Simcha in New York. Of course I had heard of it, but I never thought I would go. After camp one day, I called my mom and asked if I could go the next summer. She said yes.
A year later, I went to Camp Simcha Special for the first time. I made friends that I could really relate to. I went for a total of 2 summers that changed my life.
Camp is something that every kid talks about. Ask anyone who has been, and they will tell you how amazing it is. But pictures and videos and even stories don't do it justice. It is truly the most amazing place in the world.
So let's get back to my question: why do I continue to do Team Lifeline? The answer is because of Chai Lifeline and Camp Simcha. I understand how much Chai Lifeline is needed. I may not be able to go to camp anymore, but I want other kids to be able to. They should get the memories and experiences that I am so grateful for. Please donate to help Chai Lifeline continue doing what they do and thank you for your support.
