This February, I’ll be running the Miami marathon — sort of.

I have a principle in life: true freedom is choosing your own path, not the one everyone else takes.

So instead of running like 99.99% of the participants, I’ll be rucking — which is basically walking fast while carrying a 50-pound knapsack. It’s a way better exercise, and honestly, I think everyone should try it.

My goal is simple: to not finish dead last. Also, it’s a half marathon, not the full deal. Let’s keep expectations realistic here. Of course, this is all assuming my knees and back hold up, TSA lets me through with my rucksack, and I’m not kicked out of the marathon for violating some obscure “no backpacks” rule.

Now, for the important part: I’m not doing this just to stand out. I’m rucking as part of Team Sophie to raise money for Chai Lifeline and Camp Simcha, two incredible organizations that provide life-changing support to children with serious illnesses and their families.

Camp Simcha, in particular, gave Sophie, the daughter of our close friends David and Jenny Spangenthal, some of the happiest days of her life. At just 4.5 years old, Sophie attended camp and got to experience pure joy, completely forgetting about her illness for a while. Helicopter rides, fireworks, baking, and ice cream every day (sometimes multiple times a day!) — it was a magical escape. Even when Sophie was very sick the following summer, she still found the strength to return to camp, making memories that brought her happiness and peace.

Sophie passed away in 2019, but her spirit and the joy she found at Camp Simcha continue to inspire us all. Supporting Chai Lifeline means helping other kids like Sophie experience the same happiness and hope.
